Last of His Kind: A Story of Rage, Part Four

By Dom Devore

The trees of Rage's homeland surrounded him and the mysterious figure. This was where Rage had been born and raised. It was also the starting point for his descent into chaos.

"How... how is this possible? We were over a hundred miles from this place... How is it possible?" Rage yelled.

"We are here as you remember it Rage, this is what you remember, the only difference, is that you will also see it through the eyes of another. So that you can see the mistakes you made." The figure said with a melancholy voice.

Rage had no intention of being back here, back where he had failed in his duty. "Take me back... now!"

"It is too late Rage, this cannot be ended until you have seen what you have done wrong. It is the only way out of here... if you fail to see the truth, we will be stuck here forever and all will be lost."

The figure reached up to the hood that covered his head and pushed it back, revealing his face.

Lines of age coursed all over the man's face connecting every way possible, his head was bald and his eyes glowed with a yellowish hue.

"My name is Altyu, our fates are now tied together Rage, if you fail, I fail, and we will be doomed to relive this place for the rest of eternity.

Rage was struck by the appearance of this man, he appeared to be well into his seventies, but no human had lived that long since the great war began. "Just what are you?"

Altyu sighed. "I am one of the ones known as the Watchers, we are destined to guide the future of this realm. We are known only by a select few that we can trust, those that find out about us that we cannot trust... are killed. Our job is not one that many would envy Rage, it is full of sorrow and hardship. I was sent into the lands to find one who lost all honour, one who is filled with nothing but sorrow for his lost goals. That is you Rage, I have been watching you since you were born. Your spirit attracted me to you."

Rage did not believe a word of what Altyu was saying. "And just how did you... "detect my spirit?" he asked mockingly.

"Ahhh, but how did I bring you here? How did I stop you in your tracks in the wagon? There are many things that people do not know the true secrets, I am one of the few that do know. There was a word name that came close to describing us before the great war, we were known as Wizards. The word does not perfectly describe us, for our powers are different from the ones called Wizards, but we are related in ways."

"Bah, you are insane old man, every word you say is full of nonsense and lies, I will not stand for it."

Altyu sighed once again. "Do not test me Rage, there is too much at stake here for you to be acting like a fool. If you want proof of who I am, it will have to wait, for now, you have to trust me. If you cannot do so, then I have already failed, and that little girl will be stranded in the middle of the wastelands. Time here passes more slowly than in the real world, but it does pass, and the longer we are here, the longer she is alone out there. Will you trust me Rage?"

Rage still did not believe Altyu, but he had no choice, he was obviously the one who controlled the situation, and the girl's life was at stake. "I will follow along with your senseless plans old man, until we get out of here, and then I'm gone, along with the girl. And if you try to stop me, no matter what power you may have, I will rip your heart out from your chest."

Altyu frowned. "I truly think you are capable of that Rage, I truly do, And that's what scares me. Until then, let us move on, we have a lot to do. And you have a lot to learn."

He turned around and walked inbetween two trees, and dissapeared.

Rage growled. "Foolish old man and his insanity."

He gave up the urge to not follow the man, and stepped between the two trees, and was confronted by his own face staring at him.
